Beyond the Screen: What is "Women in Automation" Really About?
If you thought “Women in Automation” was just about sitting behind a computer screen, you’ve got it all wrong. It’s not just about lines of code; it’s about connecting the dots. It’s about women in Nigeria and across Africa stepping boldly into roles that shape homes, businesses, and entire cities.
Think of it like this: an automation expert is like a wizard. They don’t just read a spellbook; they make the magic happen in the real world. In the same way, the Women in Automation movement isn’t just a hashtag—it’s a revolution that’s bringing technology to life. From a smart farm in Ibadan that waters itself to a solar-powered home in Port Harcourt that never experiences a power cut, women aren’t just participating; they are leading.
So, let’s pull back the curtain and see what’s really happening beyond the screen.
What is “Women in Automation” Really About?
It’s not just a hashtag; it’s a revolution.
The Women in Automation movement refers to the growing wave of African women entering and excelling in fields that use technology to streamline, enhance, and transform everyday life and work. It’s about empowering ourselves to solve real-world problems. For example, some of these fields include:
Smart Home & Office Automation: Making spaces think for themselves.
Solar Energy Systems: Harnessing the sun to power our future.
Robotics & AI: Creating clever “helpers” that handle the tedious stuff.
Industrial Automation: Improving efficiency in factories and production.
Digital Agriculture & Smart Warehousing: Bringing tech to farming and logistics.
And yes, it’s happening right here in Nigeria—from Lagos to Abuja, from Enugu to Kaduna.
Career Paths Where Women are Thriving
If you’re a student, a mum, a mid-career professional, or just tech-curious, there is absolutely a place for you in this space. Remember that one time you figured out a genius way to organize your kitchen pantry? That’s the same brainpower needed for automation. Here are some of the exciting roles where women are already making a mark:
Automation Technician: The hands-on hero who installs and configures smart devices.
Robotic Process Automation (RPA) Developer: The digital genius who creates “bots” to automate repetitive office tasks, freeing up humans to do more creative work. It’s like having a super-fast intern who never complains!
Solar Technologist: Designing, installing, and maintaining solar systems that provide clean, reliable power.
AI Analyst: The data detective who uses intelligent systems to find patterns and solve complex problems, from healthcare diagnostics to optimizing city traffic.
Smart Agriculture Specialist: Using sensors, drones, and data to boost crop yields and make farming more sustainable.
Automation Sales Consultant: The tech ambassador who helps businesses understand and adopt automation solutions.
These are not futuristic jobs; they are hiring right now. And Smart City Mall Africa is committed to training the next wave of talent to fill them.
Skills That Power the Movement
To thrive in automation, women are mastering a fantastic mix of technical know-how and uniquely human soft skills. After all, what’s the point of a smart home if you can’t get it to cooperate?
Technical Skills You don’t have to be a programming prodigy to start. You just need to be willing to learn.
Programming (Python, JavaScript): The basic language of automation.
IoT Device Configuration: Teaching smart devices to talk to each other.
Data Analytics: The ability to make sense of all the information systems generate.
Robotics & AI Fundamentals: Understanding how these powerful tools work.
Soft Skills These are the skills no machine can replicate.
Creativity and Innovation: Designing solutions that solve real-world problems.
Problem-Solving: The ability to troubleshoot when a device decides to act like a moody teenager.
Emotional Intelligence: The key to leading teams and collaborating effectively.

Real Talk: Why It Matters
Automation isn’t just about tech; it’s about freedom. Freedom from repetitive tasks, freedom to create, and freedom to build a better future. And for African women, it’s also about representation. The Mastercard Foundation, in a report with McKinsey & Company, highlights that gender parity could unlock a whopping $287 billion for Africa’s economy by 2030¹.
Initiatives like the 1M Women in RPA project, founded by visionary Tholang Mathopa, aim to train one million African women in intelligent automation by 2025. This isn’t just a good idea; it’s a smart investment in our continent’s future. So yes, this movement is real, and it’s growing fast.

So I share this with my mom and sister. We had this conversation about that one automated device.
My mom said a smart table top electric or gas cooker or both would be nice. So she could cook and do other things simultaneously without getting food burnt when she forgets she is cooking it warming food.
My sister said having a system thst would detect when she falls asleep and turn off the TV and lights would be a nice have for her.
I guess we all have out unique needs and I believe there are solutions for them or at least upcoming solutions depending on thr complexities right?
This is some very helpful feedback. Thank you for sharing.
